Myth 2 About Celebrating Holidays with Diabetes

Bust This Myth: Sweets and sugary drinks make it impossible to manage diabetes

This is a tricky one since chances are you will encounter cookies and hot chocolate at some point during the holiday season. However, that doesn’t mean they have to derail you from managing your blood sugar.

If it’s something you love, have a small portion, combine it with protein and fiber to help blunt the
blood sugar spike if you can (e.g. a handful of pistachios or almonds), and adjust the carbohydrates you have in other meals that day.  It can be even better if you find a sweet with some added nutrients like nuts, vegetables, fruit, or oatmeal.

As an alternative to sugary drinks, try plain or sparkling water with a splash of fruit.  Drinking water half an hour before meals may help you eat less.
